How to create a unique photograph?

To create a unique image you need to consider 5 things.

· Inspire Me Ideas

To create a unique image you need to consider 5 things:

  1. The Subject and its meaning or symbolism
This is the most important consideration and steers how we can address the other four. To do this we need to go beyond photographing the recognisable physical things. We need to think about the meaning of a place or activity and what draws our focus and interests us. Consider what will instantly communicate where we are and the impact it is having on us and how that story can be shown in an image.

  2. The Detail in the image
To tell our story do we need to go in close and just show some small part of what is happening or is it better if we move further away to show the whole scene. Both will tell a story, but different. Which one do you think will be better, and more important to you.

  3. Composition and Framing
Everything that appears in the photograph should be essential. What is left out of the photo is as important as what is put in: the framing can give us a location, tells the season and time of day and frames the moment. Everything in the frame needs to be there.

  4. Vantage Point or angle of view
Get high. Get down low. Try to frame the subject in an interesting way. Don’t just place your subject in the centre of the frame. That’s what everyone else does. Try placing your subject one third into the frame, either from left to right or top to bottom. This helps to draw the eye through the image, creating something that is much more visually interesting. We like to call it the “rule of thirds.”

  5. Time or timing
All photographs involve Time: passing-time, space-time, moments in time. Slowing down time and showing the subject moving can tell a story about action and excitement. Importantly waiting for our subject to move into position can also tell a story. The sportsman at the peak of action or the person walking past can all help.
